BRIMM was created with a $5 million gift from Vancouver-based Canadian Mining Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Peter Bradshaw, to encourage innovation and generate solutions to mining industry challenges. Dr. Bradshaw is a geologist with 45 years international mineral exploration experience in over 30 countries with Barringer Research, Placer Dome and Orvana Minerals. He is currently Chairman of FPX Nickel Corp.
BRIMM’s objectives are to connect scientists and engineers to promote cross-disciplinary research spanning the entire life-cycle of mining, from early exploration to mine closure and rehabilitation. Building on the successes of MDRU – Mineral Deposit Research Unit, BRIMM will engage experts from all research areas to address industry challenges and make each step of the mining sector safer, cleaner, and more efficient.
At the launching, UBC Vice President, Research and Innovation, Gail Murphy, spoke, along with Dr. Peter Bradshaw, Professor Gregory Dipple (new BRIMM Director), and Sally Goodman, Vice Chair of Board of the Mineral Deposit Research Unit and Director of Generative Geology at Goldcorp.
