Trilogy Metals achieves key milestone at Alaska VMS project
Trilogy Metals Inc. [TMQ-TSX, NYSE] said its flagship Arctic project in northwestern Alaska’s Ambler Mining District has been accepted as a “Covered Project” on the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council’s Federal Permitting Dashboard under Title 41 of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act.
The company said the designation marks a pivotal milestone as Ambler Metals, a joint venture held 50/50 by Trilogy and South32 Australia Ltd. [S32-ASX, JSE, LSE, SOUHY-ADR], advances toward the start of the National Environmental Policy Act process, and positions the Arctic Project as a priority domestic critical mineral development under U.S. President Trump’s resource policy agenda.
Trilogy shares on Friday eased 6.2% or 38 cents to $5.73. The shares trade in a 52-week range of $15.21 and $1.59.
Ambler Metals has a 100% interest in the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. The UKMP is located in the Ambler Mining District, which ranks as one of the richest and most prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. It hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits that contain copper, zinc, lead, gold and silver and carbonate replacement deposits, which have been found to host high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization.
Exploration effort have been focused on two deposits in the Ambler Mining District – the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit. Both deposits are located within a land package that spans 190,929 hectares.
The company announced the results of the Arctic Feasibility Study in February 2023. It describes the potential technical and economic viability of establishing a conventional open-pit copper-zinc-lead-silver-gold mine complex for a 10,000 tonne-per-day operation. Total life-of-mine 13-year production is projected at 1.9 billion pounds of copper, 2.2 billion pounds of zinc, 335 million pounds of lead, 423,000 ounces of gold, and 36 million ounces of silver. The initial capital expenditure is pegged at US$1.17 billion.
Ambler Metals has an agreement with NNA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaskan Native Corporation that provides a framework for exploration and potential development of the Ambler Mining District in co-operation with local communities.
Trilogy has said it aims to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.
In April 2026, Ambler Metals filed an application for a Clean Water Act Section 404 permit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers initiating federal permitting for the Arctic Project. The FAST-41 Covered Project designation follows directly from that filing and from a broader sequence of federal policy actions supporting domestic critical mineral development, including the October 2025 presidential approval of the Ambler Access Road and associated $35.6 million strategic federal equity investment commitment in Trilogy Metals. The Ambler Access Road is a proposed 300-kilometre industrial-use-only road from the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) to the Dalton Hwy that would enable the advancement of exploration and development at the Ambler Mining District.
